8x8 is taking place again this autumn in Ireland!

In Autumn 2014 Suas will again host the 8x8 Festival, a week-long awareness-raising initiative, in five college campuses in Ireland. The 2014 festival programme will feature award-winning photographers, engaging speaker events and a selection of documentary films. The festival will revolve around a high-profile touring photographic exhibit which aims to raise challenge perspectives of development and highlight innovations happening in the Global South.

Plans are well under way with photo entries being voted on as they come in, student working groups developing the exhibit concept and proposing additional events for their campus.

We feel that this is a very exciting opportunity. We have a chance to reach all students and to engage them with development and global issues in an exciting way. The exhibition is a brilliant opportunity to re-frame coverage of development issues in Ireland and to discuss the Millennium Development Goals in the countdown to 2015.

If you would like to become involved in the 8x8 festival, please drop a line to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or submit your photo entries to the 8x8 competition by June 25th.

Global Campus: Week on Sustainable Development

The research center CARDET organized a Development week, during 18-22 November, 2013, in collaboration with the University of Nicosia, the European University of Cyprus and the Open University of Cyprus.

The Development week was organized in the context of the EuropeAid project “Global Campus”, which aims to contribute to a change in public attitudes in Austria, Cyprus, Ireland and Malta towards the issues that developing countries and their peoples are facing; to contribute to an increased public support for action against poverty in Europe, particularly the Millennium Development Goals agenda, and fairer relations between developed and developing countries; to contribute to the strengthening of development policy and the promotion of policy coherence at national and European levels especially relating to migration, trade, security, human rights, environment and HIV/AIDS. The project focuses on developing student competencies in addressing issues of global development through the use of learner-centred, participatory, dialogue-oriented and experiential methodologies.

During the Development week, representatives from CARDET attended the events at the Universities and informed students on the “Global Campus” project and its aims, distributing information material about Sustainable Development and Education. Also, the students who agreed and were interested with the ideas and goals of the project had the opportunity to sign a petition on Development. Overall, more than 200 students from all the involved universities in Cyprus signed this petition.

Furthermore, CARDET organized a workshop for university students entitled “Students discuss about development” and a seminar on “Sustainable Development: Policy and practice, from local to global”, in which presented the strategy of the Ministry of Education and Culture of Cyprus on Sustainable Development and Education, and the development policy of the Republic of Cyprus and the role of Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) in promoting sustainable development at local and global level. Also, throughout the Development week, a photo exhibition was hosted at the University of Nicosia, at which the work of the international organization World Vision was presented. In particular, the photos were depicting moments of the work of the organization in the development sector, in various countries.

The week on Sustainable Development was organized with the support of the UNESCO Chair of the University of Nicosia, the European University, the Open University of Cyprus and the international organization World Vision.
